The American Design Club Presents: “Use Me”

04 May 2011, Posted by Samantha in events, 0 Comments

45 American designers are coming together at the American Design Building at Great Jones Lumber to display their best in functional and fascinating creations.

As a seasoned veteran of visiting consignment stores for affordable vintage and thrifting my way through college (yes, my senior year couch cost $20), I appreciate the ambition of the current generation not only to reuse, but to reinvent objects past. We are sure to see a perfect example of that from May 13th-16th at the American Design Building exhibition “Use Me.” Let me first start off by saying, you won’t be finding an $20 couches here, as this is not a thrift store. BUT, you can expect to see designers who have recycled and recreated works of design brilliance from the most basic of materials. Exhibition features include furniture made from the wooden deck of the USS North Carolina as well as the maplewood Tree Chunk toothpick dispenser. I tend to love the look of all the items I’ve seen pictures of; the pieces are not only minimalist in style, but they seem to embody intelligence. To be honest, I think owning one of these pieces would actually make me feel smarter on a daily basis.

The event is backed by The American Design Club whose focus is on promoting emerging American designers and building their reputation in the global design world, a place where American representation has long been lacking. Hopefully this exhibition can help to purt Americans where they need to be on the global design map.
