Parsons Festival

Last week we visited some of the exhibitions at Parsons Festival. One exhibition particularly left us in awe, featuring a few students from the Design and Technology program.

Chris Lunney “performed” his final project during the Parsons festival – a impressive experience of light, video, projection, music, dance, and a little bit of craziness.

The performance made us desperate to get off our chairs, get out the 80’s fashion and light sticks, and start dancing in the class-room-turned-gallery at Parsons School of Design

The performance, called Trace, is a great first chapter in Lunney’s exploration of how to combine simple elements into an interactive musical creation. The opportunities are many and we are curious to see where Lunney will take this project in the future.

In addition Alfonso Chavez also impressed us with his neon phantoms. A project featuring atmospheric laser light designs, the viewer simply sprays water from a squirt bottle onto the light.

I was there. It was capitivating for about 10 minutes so this only shows a sample. This video is wonderful because itself adds even another layer of light traveling through space to a piece that is all about the idea of light and movement and sound playing in space. There were several layers to the visual field; challenging the perception of depth, the changing computer generated images were stopped, or more accuratley filtered by a black scrim, then they would be “caught by the dancing figure, and also show up against the back wall. There was another source of visual input which captured info behind the scrim and which added to the depth and patterning. Add to this the dancing and the light sticks and it was a vibrant and constantly changing feast of color, sound, motion, and patterns. I found my thoughts wondering and creating scenes and stories. If great art takes you to another place, then this was great art.
