Streaming music to my ears.

Pandora has been my commute savior since the iPhone app first arrived, but the song repetition is undeniable after a while. However, my iTunes library is lacking to say the least, and I just don’t feel like spending any money on CDs right now, not to mention taking up movie space on my iPhone. There’s only so much room for the ultimate Jean Claude Van Damme collection on the device, and I can’t have music interfering with that. At last, Apple seems poised to save the day.

With the impending acquisition of the streaming music service, LaLa, Apple will be able to sell streaming music for prices as low as 10 cents per song. The deal makes great business sense for Apple as well, which is detailed here.

Up to this point, all iTunes-related activity has been locally stored. This “cloud-based” alternative will allow the music to stream from an internet server, preserving precious iPhone and computer memory space. Furthermore, even when service is down, the server’s cache will store the last few hundred songs, meaning that you can keep grooving once you hit the subway. Because of the current culture of handheld devices with wireless internet connections, a move in this direction seemed inevitable, but it does not make it any less satisfying.  Apple is well-known as a great brand from a technological and aesthetic perspective, but keeping up with the needs and desires of the consumer is no less a part of the brand’s tremendous success.

Apple giveth.

Consumer listen away.
