Bauhaus goes MOMA.

When I went to see the current Bauhaus exhibition at MOMA last week, I didn’t expect to get too excited, as I am not a very big fan of the Bauhaus in general. I was rather surprised by the fact that the exhibition is actually really exciting and fascinating .
I thought I knew quite some Bauhaus work and never really got into it. Seeing the original pieces did make me reconsider my view on the topic though. The complexity, the originality and the undoubted innovation this school has delivered to the world of design is truly amazing. The more so as all works have been created between 1919 and 1933. We have all seen great furniture pieces like chairs by Marcel Breuer or the Wagenfeld Lamp. Many consider them as masterpieces, designed for eternity, being truly timeless. But many more creations born at Bauhaus stand the test of time: photography, graphics, architecture, everyday objects like ashtrays, sculptures, paintings … The exhibition gives an insight on how many of the concepts have evolved into these masterpieces.
If you think you know Bauhaus, because you’ve seen its work in books and other publications, go and see the exhibition – you might be surprised.
